The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University,is located in Changchun, Jilin Province. Originally established in 1936 as the Special Municipal Hospital of the pseudo-Manchukuo's new capital, Xinjing, it underwent several changes before being renamed as the Second Clinical College of Bethune Medical University in December 1978 . In 1994, it was classified as a Grade III, Class A hospital by the former Ministry of Health. Following the merger in June 2000 of Jilin University with six other universities including Bethune Medical University, the hospital was officially renamed as the Second Hospital of Jilin University. It is a modern Grade III, Class A comprehensive hospital directly managed by the Ministry of Education and under the budgetary control of the National Health Commission, incorporating medical treatment, teaching, research, rehabilitation, and healthcare.

As one of the centers for diagnosing and treating difficult and critical illnesses in Jilin Province and even the wider Northeastern region, the hospital covers an area of 181,000 square meters,with a building area of 439,000 square meters. It currently has three campuses - Ziqiang, Yatai, and Qingnian - and includes five specialized hospitals (Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cardiovascular Diseases) within its structure, along with 10 centers and 82 clinical and medical technology departments. The hospital has a total of 4,090 beds across its three campuses and employs 4,475 staff members, with annual outpatient and emergency visits that is expected to exceed 3 million this year.

The hospital has a comprehensive range of disciplines,with significant strengths in certain areas. Some disciplines have achieved leading positions nationally, entering the ranks of first-class institutions in the country. Its six traditional disciplines - Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dermatology, Respiratory, Nephrology, Otolaryngology - have consistently leading positions within the province, while emerging disciplines like Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Pathology, Rehabilitation, Radiation Therapy, and Neonatology are also gaining prominence. The hospital enjoys a solid reputation and widespread public recognition.

Equipped with more than 200 sophisticated, large-scale medical devices, including Da Vinci surgical robots, Tianji surgical robots, Philips PET-CT, Siemens SPECT-CT, Siemens Force Dual Source CT, GE Revolution 256 CT, Neusoft 256 CT, GE Pioneer 3.0T MRI, Siemens Prisma 3.0T MRI, GE Lunar DXA bone densitometer, Varian linear accelerator, Philips Azurion 7M20 DSA, Siemens Artis Q floor DSA, the hospital is at the forefront of medical technology.

The hospital places great emphasis on talent cultivation, forming exceptional teaching teams. It currently boasts four dual-employed academicians, 389 graduate tutors (including 77 doctoral tutors), a national "Ten Thousand Talents Plan" leader in scientific and technological innovation, a winner of the 46th Florence Nightingale Medal, a "Yangtze River Scholars Special Appointment Professor", and more. It hosts 23 national residency training bases, 5 professional training bases, and 11 provincial continuing medical education bases. In the past five years, the hospital has developed one national first-class undergraduate course, two national boutique video open courses, 12 provincial-level courses, and includes one Jilin Province famous teacher, one provincial-level Huang Danian-style teaching team, and three provincial-level outstanding teaching teams. The hospital has secured over 200 teaching research projects, won one national-level second prize for teaching achievements, and seven provincial-level teaching achievement awards. It also boasts eight provincial and ministerial-level teacher lecture competition honors and top awards in national medical college student clinical skills competitions.In 2021, our hospital ranked third in the national level test for Clinical Medicine undergraduate programs among medical colleges and universities. Moreover, across all indicators, our hospital secured the top position among the participating schools.

In the field of scientific research, the hospital has achieved new heights, with 43 provincial-level research platforms. Over the past five years, it has received 51 National Natural Science Foundation projects, one national key special project, three national key R&D program projects, and over 1,000 provincial and ministerial-level research projects. It has been awarded one second-class Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, three third-class awards, 11 first-class Jilin Province Science and Technology Awards, and 16 second-class awards. As the primary completing institution, it has published 1,539 SCI-indexed papers and received 191 authorized invention patents. In 2022, the Second Hospital of Jilin University was honored as an "Advanced Collective in National Public Science Literacy Work during the 13th Five-Year Plan" in Jilin Province.

The hospital's comprehensive strength continues to grow, featuring 13 national clinical key specialty construction projects and 8 provincial-level medical quality control centers. It has been recognized as a national baby-friendly hospital, a national public-assured demonstration hospital, and a Jilin Province high-quality nursing service demonstration hospital. It received the National Health Commission's 2019 Innovative Hospital in Medical Service Improvement award and was honored as an "Advanced Collective in the National Health System for COVID-19 Prevention and Control" by the three national ministries and commissions. Six individuals were awarded as "Advanced Individuals in the National Health System for COVID-19 Prevention and Control," and two received the "National Advanced Individual in Fighting COVID-19" honor.

With the completion and operation of the Yatai Campus at 4026 Yatai Street, Changchun, the hospital has significantly improved its medical environment, forming a historic new structure of "One Hospital, Three Campuses" with Yatai, Ziqiang, and Qingnian campuses.
